Université de Bologne (IT)

The University of Bologna was founded in 1088. It is one of the most renowned and prestigious universities in Europe. It is the most populous university community in Italy, with 86,000 registered students, 2,800 professors (tenured, associate and assistant professors) and 3,000 technical and administrative staff.

UNIBO is a comprehensive institution of higher education with 32 departments and 219 degree programmes: 92 undergraduate (BA), 114 graduate (MA) and 13 single cycle programmes. UNIBO also offers 45 doctoral programmes, 52 schools of specialization, 74 professional courses, of which 16 are international.

UNIBO is a multi-campus university with 5 campuses in the Emilia-Romagna region: the main and oldest campus in Bologna, plus 4 additional campuses in Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini. Each campus has its own scientific and educational identity and maintains active and strong collaborative links with local authorities, organisations and communities in order to strengthen the cultural, economic and social development of these territories.

UNIBO is strongly rooted in its territory and is the most internationalized of all Italian universities:

  • Internationalized educational offer: of the 219 degree programmes active at UNIBO, 69 are international, of which 36 lead to a double/multiple/joint degree awarded with other universities.
  • Recruitment of international students – UNIBO has 6,300 international students regularly enrolled in its courses.
  • Participation in international E&T and research networks including Utrecht Network, Coimbra Group, The Guild, UNIMED, UNA Europa and Climate KIC, EIT Digital and EIT Raw Material
  • Participation in EU-funded projects in the period 2014-2019: UNIBO participated in 147 Erasmus+ and 244 Horizon2020 projects, as well as 27 other EU-funded research projects (Interreg, Life, Creative Europe, COST).
  • Mobility – Every year, more than 2,200 EU students come to UNIBO as part of exchange programmes, and more than 2,700 UNIBO students spend a period of study in other EU countries. In 2018, UNIBO was the first university in Europe to offer Erasmus+ international mobility. If extra-EU mobility is also considered, these figures amount to more than 3,000 incoming students and more than 3,100 outgoing UNIBO students spending a period of study abroad.
